About Alliance Geotechnical

Established in 2003, Alliance Geotechnical provides innovative, specialist consultancy and testing services on large-scale civil and infrastructure projects predominately in NSW.

We operate a highly specialised geo-testing laboratory that works closely with universities to deliver state-of-the-art testing for Tier 1 organisations. Our lab is recognised for having some of the best equipment in Australia, and our approach is proudly practical — we focus on giving our clients what they actually need.

We work on a diverse range of landmark projects with Tier 1 partners including Acciona, Ausgrid, CPB and Gamuda, spanning major infrastructure such as the new Western Sydney Airport, the Warringah Freeway upgrade, and renewable energy projects across QLD, NSW and VIC.

With three offices across two states and around 150 people, we’ve built a reputation for technical excellence grounded in strong relationships, trust, and teamwork.

The opportunity

We’re looking for a Financial Controller who is as comfortable building a cash flow model as they are redesigning the process behind it.

Reporting to the Director, the Financial Controller is a full-time role and a contributing member of our Senior Leadership Team. You’ll lead a team of two finance professionals and take full ownership of the financial function – reporting, compliance, budgeting, cash flow, and financial strategy. You’ll work closely with the directors and group managers to provide financial guidance that keeps the business sharp and positioned for continued growth.

This role suits someone who brings both rigour and initiative. You’ll run the numbers well – and then look for ways to run them better. We use Xero, and we want someone who will actively drive automation and system integration across the finance function. If you see a manual process and your first instinct is to fix it, you’ll fit right in.

Respect and trust matter here – and you’ll earn both through your impact and your approach.

Who we’re looking for

You’re a qualified accountant (CPA or CA) with strong experience in a senior finance role, ideally within a growing SME. You know how to lead a team, how to hold the line on compliance, and how to translate financial data into decisions that matter.

More importantly: you’re someone who leans into technology. You’re curious about what Xero and connected tools can do, and you’ve got the initiative to actually make it happen rather than just talk about it. Experience with M&A is a genuine advantage – we’re a growth-minded business and that lens is increasingly relevant.

You will bring:

•     Tertiary qualification in accounting; CPA or CA preferred

•     Proven experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance role in an SME environment

•     Strong command of Xero and a genuine drive to push automation and system integration

•     A commercial mindset with the confidence to contribute at leadership level

•     Experience with or exposure to M&A activity (desirable, not essential)

•     Strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities without losing the detail

What you’ll be great at (aka the non-negotiables)

Financial management and reporting

You take ownership of the numbers and make sure leadership always has a clear picture:

•     Accurate and timely financial statements, management accounts, and reports

•     Compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements

•     Asset management, depreciation tracking, and financial records

•     Financial insights and analysis that support real decisions

Budgeting, forecasting and cash flow

You keep the business financially fit and ahead of problems:

•     Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with group managers

•     Quarterly forecasts and monthly cash flow projections

•     Monitor performance against budget and deliver variance analysis

•     Oversee accounts payable and receivable to maintain a healthy working capital cycle

Taxation and compliance

You stay on top of obligations and keep the business protected:

•     Timely and accurate BAS, PAYG, payroll tax, superannuation, FBT and income tax returns

•     Internal controls that reduce financial and regulatory risk

•     Liaison with external accountants and regulatory bodies as required

Automation and systems

You don’t just manage the system – you improve it:

•     Lead Xero optimisation and integration with other business systems

•     Identify and implement automation opportunities across the finance function

•     Collaborate with leadership and external providers on system selection and implementation

•     Close gaps in processes that affect data integrity, compliance, or performance

Payroll

You oversee end-to-end payroll and make sure it runs without drama:

•     Timely, accurate, and compliant employee payments

•     Statutory payroll compliance and accurate reporting

Team leadership

You lead a small, capable team and help them grow:

•     Mentoring, coaching, and developing two finance professionals

•     Accountability for team performance, engagement, and career progression
